It's huge. With its S-class sedan underpinnings (on a 8.3-inch-shorter wheelbase), uninhibited measurements, and too-extended-at-supper mass (4699 pounds), the late Mercedes CL550 (unobtrusively challenge lifted, liberally adrenalized) is one of the most expansive four-seat cars on earth. Only the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé is more gigantic.
It's potent. A brand new twin-turbo, 4.7-liter straight-infusion V-8 supports output over that of the old instinctively suctioned 5.5-liter by 47 drive and 125 pound-feet of torque, doing so with less dislodging and a 2-mpg increment in parkway mileage. (Unlike the past CL550, the base cost makes a point not to incorporate a gas-guzzler expense. The EPA estimates 15 mpg metro, 23 parkway. We recorded 16 in, uh, spirited driving.)
